Designing a medical center in the world we live in today becomes much of a task when speaking in terms of codes and laws which must be upheld, leaving virtually no area for creative space.  This summer studio gives the chance to not only question these codes as to how sympathetic they are to the healing process, but also theoretically design a space that could house medical practices. While taking on the previously mentioned, the site chosen brought with it many considerations as well. Manhattan, a place well within the context of a major city, this became an urban scale project. What does that mean? A heightened awareness of the social, economical, and cultural aspects needs to be dealt with. In choosing the site for this project three conditions could be considered, in an existing building, on top of an existing building, or in a vacant lot, with the possibility of a fourth condition of ones own imagination. I had chosen the fourth, I decided to choose a site, which alluded to building in as well as next to. By choosing this, I brought on the question to answer, how does one connect these two amenties without being ornamental or theatrical. After many attempts a way of doing so was achieved by using an idea and integrating it into the context of the building again so that it became usable space and not ornamental. The system I devised amounted to an undulating wall that begins at the façade and enters into the interior becoming a grid of removable glass panels to accommodate other utilities. Then came the question of program, why did I decide to over exceed the required square footage needed? The answer was to accommodate for temporary living space for recovering elderly and a neonatal clinic for premature or clinically dependent babies, and mothers. With the merging of these two programs I believe they will aid each other in their healing. Not only will the mothers be able to stay in the same room as their mothers in some situations, but also when possible the elderly could see the babies reminding their senses of a youthful feeling.
