ARTS 4961 Syllabus (pdf) Suggested Concerts for Review This is an advanced course in computer music. The prerequisite is ARTS-2020 or permission of the instructor. The course builds upon the skills developed in ARTS-2020, giving the student a deeper technical and musical understanding of computer music. It assumes a working familiarity with ProTools, Ableton Live, and the sound sources in Reason. On the technical side, we’ll spend the first half of the semester working with Max4Live. Musically, there will be a series of assigned creative exercises through the first half of the semester, leading to a free compositional project. Simultaneously, there will be an exploration of the use of the computer in real time performance, which will develop through the semester. There is no required textbook for this course, and all texts and recordings of the works we study will be posted on the HASS server. All music software for the course is available for use in the computer music studios of the Arts Department's iEAR Studios. Students have 24/7 access to the studios. Complete information about the course, including a detailed schedule and list of assignments, is in the documents linked at the top of this page. To access listening and reading materials for the class, you must be registered for the course. The materials are on the HASS server.
