It could be said that graffiti is the ultimate form of installation
art. Whether it is a sticker slapped on a wall, a tag written on the
inside of a bus, or a stencil on the pavement, graffiti can make a
truly bohemian gallery for any man to see. It is a way that a no name
artist can get a gallery as big as they want, and get *everyone* to
see it. People who ordinarily wouldn't be exposed to art get a chance
to view current pieces.
However, graffiti is still often seen as wanton defacing of property,
even though the graffiti aesthetic is popping up in advertisements
in large cities around the globe.
Spray paint stenciling is actually very similar to silk screening,
a technique that Andy Warhol, and many others employed to produce
revolutionary pieces. My project will hopefully inform people about
spray paint art and its artistic validity.
This project is designed to explore the possibilities of stencil
art. Is it possible to produce "gallery worthy" art in a
medium that is available to the common man?
