Caren Canier's solo show of collages, Babbo ti amiamo, opened in Italy on August 12, 2009 at the Civitella Ranieri Gallery.

On Father's Day 1987 when Canier's oldest son was an infant, she wrote "Babbo Ti Amo" (Daddy I Love You) on a fruit wrapper from Cesena to create a spur of the moment card for his father.  By 1990 when his younger brother was born, a yearly tradition of marking Father's Day with a commemorative collage had been established.

Canier, whose paintings incorporate elements of collage and mixed media, made these impromptu Fathers' Day cards from the boxes of scraps and found materials she uses for her paintings.  "Babbo Ti Amiamo" presents 23 years of whimsical collages that speak to the pleasures of family traditions and the cross-cultural experience of Americans who live in Italy. Some of the collages were made in Italy while others were made in New York and sent to Babbo in Italy.  Canier and her family divide their time between Gubbio and Troy, New York, where she is a Professor in the Arts Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The exhibition will also include a slide reel of Canier's recent paintings, many of which address themes of familial relationships and shared experiences of place and history.

Canier is the recipient of numerous awards and grants including:  the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, the Ingram Merrill Foundation Grant, two grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the New York State CAPS Grant, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and the Distinguished Alumni Award of Boston University College for the Arts.

Her solo exhibitions include Robert Schoelkopf Gallery and Bowery Gallery in New York, Boston University, The University of New Hampshire Art Museum, Drew University in Madison NJ, Concordia University in Ann Arbor MI and the American Academy in Rome.  Her next solo exhibition will take place in February 2010 at The Painting Center in New York.
