Arts Department Music Ensembles Audition Time-slots Now Open!

The following music ensembles will be offered by the Arts Department of the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) in academic year 2013–14:

Rensselaer Orchestra – One-credit course (ARTS 2300), graded, offered in Fall and Spring semesters. Rehearsals (class meetings) are on Mondays and Thursdays from 6–7:50 pm in 326 West Hall. The orchestra is directed and conducted by Professor Nicholas DeMaison.

Rensselaer Concert Choir – One-credit course (ARTS 2310), graded, offered in Fall and Spring semesters. Rehearsals (class meetings) are on Wednesday 6:30–8:50 pm at the Rensselaer Chapel and Cultural Center. The Concert Choir is directed and conducted by Professor Nicholas DeMaison.

Rensselaer Chamber Music Ensemble – Two-credit course (ARTS 2350), graded, offered in Fall and Spring semesters. Rehearsals (class meetings) are on Monday and Thursday 8:00–9:30 pm in West Hall 326. The Chamber Music Ensemble is directed and conducted by Professor Nicholas DeMaison.

Roots of Africa Music Ensemble – One-credit course (ARTS 2961), graded, offered in Fall and Spring semesters. Rehearsals (class meetings) are on Wednesday 7:00-9:30 pm in West Hall 326. The Roots of Africa Music Ensemble is directed and conducted by Professor Eddie Ade Knowles.

 

AUDITIONS

To register for an audition timeslot, please log onto: https://doodle.com/hass_rpi. Audition is required for new and returning students.

Auditions will be held as follows:

Instrumentalists (Orchestra/Chamber Ensemble and Roots of Africa Music Ensemble): SATURDAY, AUGUST 24, 1–5 pm, West Hall, room 326 (orchestra) West Hall, room 112 (Roots of Africa Music Ensemble)

Instrumentalists (Orchestra/Chamber Ensemble): SUNDAY, AUGUST 25, 1–5 pm, West Hall, room 326

Vocalists (Concert Choir): TUESDAY, AUGUST 27, 10 am–4 pm, West Hall, room 326

For Orchestra and Chamber Music Ensemble: 1–2 minute prepared solo; orchestral or chamber music excerpts (as requested by conductor); scales and arpeggios, 2–3 octaves, major and minor; sight reading. Please note: NO accompanist will be available for instrumental auditions.

For Concert Choir: 1–2 minute prepared solo; vocalization (as requested by conductor); sight reading. An accompanist (piano) will be available; please bring an extra copy of your piece if you wish to be accompanied.

For Roots of Africa Music Ensemble: Arts 2340 (Intro to Afro-Cuban Percussion) or permission of the director/conductor; demonstrated fundamental hand technique in playing Conga (open and closed slaps, base tones, and back tones), Shekere, Cowbell, and/or Clave; demonstrated knowledge of Afro-Cuban or Latin rhythms on Conga, Cowbell, and/or Clave (approx. 20 min.) 

CONCERTS


The Orchestra and Concert Choir each perform one main concert each semester, plus the holiday concert in December. Students may also have the opportunity to participate in other events, such as the GameFest Concert that kicks off RPI GameFest in April. Concert attire is semi-formal black; students provide their own concert attire.

The Chamber Ensemble performs once or twice per semester, at the discretion of the director, and may participate in such events as the holiday concert in December and the GameFest concert that kicks off RPI GameFest in April. Concert attire is semi-formal black; students provide their own concert attire.

The Roots of Africa Music Ensemble performs one to two public performances each semester.

INSTRUMENTS

Orchestra students must provide their own instruments, with the exception of percussion, contrabass, and certain specialized woodwinds and brass. Instrument storage will be available.

Latin percussion instruments will be provided for Roots of Africa Music Ensemble and auditions; instruments are the property of RPI and are stored on campus.
