Study no. 30 explores the concept of the musical score as installation. Inspired conceptually, compositionally, and sonically by tubular wind chimes, a ring of tuned bells appear to float in space, providing simply the potential for performance, and an invitation for audience interaction. In January 2014, Lecturer in the Department of the Arts Nathan Meltz opens his solo exhibition Laborers at Southern Illinois University’s Vergette Gallery. Laborers uses printmaking, collage, video, and sculpture to critically investigate the intersection of labor and technology. Arts Professor Michael Century performs October 12 in the opening concert of the Art+Communication 2013 Festival in Riga, Latvia. The concert features audiovisual and electronic music by composers from Italy, Canada, United Kindgdom, Latvia and the U.S., and occurs at Riga's historic Spīķeri Concert Hall. Art+Communication 2013 is the fifteenth in an annual International Festival for New Media Culture that this year is happening in conjunction with the Fifth International Conference on Media Art Histories, from Oct 8-11. Join us for a screening and discussion of the riveting documentary chronicling the struggles of a group of black and Latino whistleblower cops and the young minorities they are pressured to arrest and summons in New York City.
A workshop “Storytelling at the Margins,” with the film’s director/producer/cinematographer/editor Stephen Maing, will precede the screening from 4-6pm.
