Video Installation: MIRROR

West Hall Gallery, Room 111, RPI Campus

January 20, 2009 10:00 AM - February 13, 2009

By Clara Tomaz

Exhibition dates:  January 20 - February 13, 2009.

MIRROR is a five-minute animation about a personal experience of cancer. It goes deep into emotions and feelings, trying to take the viewer through the difficult journey of a chronic and life-threatening disease in a virtual and metaphorical way.   MIRROR belongs to and is part of a bigger project: HIDDEN BEAUTY, which aims to explore the microcosm of human disfigurement after cancer.

It is all about the concepts of beauty, self-esteem, fears.
It is about identity, lost and found again.
It is about the useless effort of overlapping past and present selves that won't ever match.
It is about undeniable change.
It is also about acceptance,
the one disfigured people allow themselves at some point
and the one they expect and wish from the others.

Exhibition opening:  Wed., January 21, 2009 from 5-7:00 p.m.

Gallery hours:  Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or by apppointment.

About the Artist

Clara Tomaz was born in Milan (Italy) in 1970 and graduated in Modern Languages and Literature in 1994. She translated classic dramas and short novels from Russian and English for minor and major Italian Publishers, and then worked as a high school teacher of English as a second language for almost a decade. Clara nurtured passion for art as a personal interest for years taking random classes of A-fresco painting, photography, Roman and Byzantine Mosaic. After visiting Russia, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Nepal, France, Switzerland, Spain, she finally settled down in the Unites States of America: Illinois first, eventually New York. At RPI, Clara took up Art Studies more seriously.  She focused on traditional art at the beginning, and only recently turned to digital imaging and animation as she feels that they can best help her express the dynamism of the human soul.
