Kingston, N.Y.—This summer marks the return of the 17-year cicadas (or Magicicada septendecim, Brood II) to the Hudson Valley. Deep Listening Institute, in collaboration with Mikhail Horowitz, David Rothenberg, and the City of Kingston, has plans to celebrate this reemergence with the Second 17-Year Cicada Celebration, a three-day festival weekend of art, music, poetry, and nature in and around the City of Kingston, Saugerties, and New Paltz.

The life cycle of the periodic cicadas is one of nature’s grandest, and its culmination — with a mass emergence of billions of singing insects once every 17 years — is an amazing spectacle. Our goal is to celebrate and educate, to convey the wonder and the glory of these insects to our friends and neighbors in the Hudson Valley, in the hope that they can look upon them as something infinitely more than a “nuisance” or a “pestilence,” as they have been considered in some quarters in the past.

In 1996, a Cicada Celebration produced by Mikhail Horowitz and Georg and Nancy Donskoj welcomed the cicadas with a “hail and farewell” display of art, video, music, poetry, and an entomological presentation at the old location of Donskoj and Co. on Broadway. This year’s events will feature more of the same, including a few of the “old brood” of artists that performed in ’96.

Here are the highlights of this year’s Cicada Celebration
