In the Presence of the Body Conference

In the Presence of the Body, is a season of events dedicated to art,
biology and society. This conference includes exhibits featuring
documentation of a diverse range of biological artworks and invited
speakers who will discuss their research, artistic projects and
experiences working collaboratively between science and art. Curator:

EXHIBITS:
West Hall, Gallery 111, Opens April 18th until April 27th: Documentation
of Bio-Artworks by many different artists who have helped to shape and
develop an incredibly diverse range of approaches to working in and
around the science lab.

Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, Main foyer,
Opens April 23rd: Documentation of MEART the Semi Living Artist, a
result of seven years of collaboration between SymbioticA Research, and
Dr. Steve Potter's Lab. MEART uses a ?living brain? of cultured cells to
control and robotic arm that produces drawings on paper. Dr. Potter will
be speaking about the project during Mondays talks.

Speakers? Bios:

Steve Potter (Ph.D., Biological Sciences, University of
California?Irvine, Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, 1993,
Assistant Professor, Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering,
Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta)

The Potter Group works in Atlanta, GA, where Professor Potter is an
Assistant Professor in the Laboratory for NeuroEngineering. This is a
collective research unit within the Department of Biomedical Engineering
shared between Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Professor Potter is also a Program Faculty for Emory University's
Neuroscience Graduate Program. He will speak about his project New
Neuroscience Technology for Studying Learning In Vitro: The Animat in a
Dish . He will also speak about his experience in collaborative work
with artists for the project MEART the Semi Living Artist, which is the
focus of the exhibition In the Presence of the Body at the Bio Tech
Center at RPI.

The Potter Group projects:

? Controlling epilepsy with multielectrode stimulation (in collaboration
with Dr. Robert Gross at Emory).

? Development of the mammalian olfactory system, a 2-photon imaging
collaboration with Prof. Peter Mombaerts of the Rockefeller University.

Steve Kurtz (Ph.D., Interdisciplinary Humanities, University of Florida,
artist, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York,
founding member Critical Art Ensemble)

Kurtz is a member of the artist group Critical Art Ensemble and
Associate Professor in the Department of Art at the State University of
New York's University at Buffalo. His areas of focus are contemporary
art history and theory as well as poststudio practices. Kurtz received
an B.A. in Sociology in 1981 and an M.A. in Social Thought &
Sociological Theory in 1983, both from the University of North Texas. As
a student Kurtz together with Steve Barnes began a collaboration to make
low-tech videos for which they used the signature Critical Art Ensemble.
One year later, in 1987, Critical Art Ensemble (CAE) transfored into a
broad-based artist and activist collective. In 1990 Kurtz received a
Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Humanities from the Florida State University.
His appointments included Associate Faculty, Goddard College (1993/94)
and Graduate Faculty, Vermont College (1992/94), and Associate Faculty,
Carnegie Mellon University (1995-2002). Steve Kurtz joined the Art
Department at SUNY Buffalo in the Fall 2002.

Critical Art Ensemble is a collective of five tactical media
practitioners of various specializations, who focus on the exploration
of the intersections between art, critical theory, technology, and
political activism. The collective has performed and produced a wide
variety of projects for an international audience at diverse venues
ranging from the street, to the museum, to the Internet. Critical Art
Ensemble has also written five books: Their most recent works include
The Molecular Invasion (Autonomedia, 2002) and Marching Plague: Germ
Warfare and Global Public Health (Autonomedia, 2005).


Adam Zaretsky (MFA School of the Art Institute of Chicago, artist,
Universiteit Leiden, The Netherlands)

Adam Zaretsky will speak about the class of Biology and Arts he is
teaching currently at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands as well
as about his art projects. He will be tele-presented from Leiden, with
possible involvement of some of the faculty and the students.
Professor Adam Zaretsky is a bio-artist, working as a research affiliate
in Arnold Demain's Laboratory for Industrial Microbiology and
Fermentation in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Department
of Biology. He received a Master of Fine Arts in 1999 from the School of
the Art Institute of Chicago, where he studied and researched with
'transgenic' artist Eduardo Kac. Since then, he has worked with such
pioneers of bio-art as Joe Davis, Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr. Zaretsky
also taught an art and biology studio class in fall 2001 as a visiting
artist at San Francisco State University. He has been invited by
Prof.Dr. Robert Zwijnenberg of The Arts and Genomic Centre and the Arts
Department, University of Leiden in conjunction with Prof.Dr. Huub de
Groot, Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gorlaeus
Laboratories, University of Leiden to teach the class VivoArts: Art and
Biology Studio - Wet Lab Practice and Bio-Art Pedagogy at the Faculty of
Arts, Department of Art History University of Leiden. Besides the
bio-art installations on which he is working, Zaretsky has created a
large body of digital artworks, collage and photography.
