Location: West Hall Gallery 111

Time: 7:00 PM- Opening Reception; Lecture 7:30 PM, West Hall Auditorium

iEAR Presents! welcomes multi-media artist Tiffany Holmes to the Rensselaer campus on Wednesday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in West Hall Auditorium on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 15th Street & Sage Avenue. Ms. Holmes' presentation will include a reception with the artist beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the West Hall Gallery, Room 111.

Entitled "Your Face Is Safe With Me, Holmes' work is an animation generated in real time using live feed from a closed circuit television network (CCTV) located in the Arts Department in West Hall. The animation is a humorous yet critical commentary on the increasing number of surveillance cameras in urban and suburban spaces. The large projection portrays the computer playing simple videogames with itself for no purpose-high scores do not exist here. The games parodied refer to the proliferation of surveillance camera networks and their potential to be perceived as hostile intruders in community spaces-as envisioned in the updated Space Invaders™ game. In one videogame, Pacman™ chomps through a single CCTV screenshot to reveal several others-alluding to our culture's voracious appetite for covert imagery. The new Asteroids® play involves a tiny ship blasting surveillance camera images into ever smaller ones, alluding to the immense amount of banal imagery generated daily by CCTV networks. The computer used in this exhibition deletes all images gathered live within one hour. Exhibit closes March 30th. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
