    The Martinez Gallery announces its exhibition URBANITIES opening to the public with a reception on Sunday, April 22, from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. This exhibition marks the sixth year of operation of the Gallery at the historic Cannon Building in Troy, N.Y.

    URBANITIES explores ideas of urban landscape and history, social interaction, and notions of identity and dissolution in cities through the work of five international artists: Jaime Suarez and Caren Carnier, in the Front Gallery, and Raul Acero, Carolyn Bardos, and George Simmons, in the Back Gallery.

    Jaime Suarez, Puerto Rico, exhibits in museums and galleries globally. His public art graces public spaces in Europe, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. His works are in the permanent collections of 19 museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).He earned a bachelors in architecture from Catholic University, Washington, D.D., and a masters from Columbia University in NYC. Suarez is a founder of the Architecture School at Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico.

    Caren Canier, Troy, is a prominent painter who has exhibited internationally. Among her many awards are the Rome Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome, the Ingram Merrill Foundation Grant, two Artist's Fellowships from the NY Foundation for the Arts, and the Pollock/Krasner Foundation Grant. She received a BFA in painting from Cornell University and an MFA from Boston University. Canier is a professor in the arts department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy.

    Raul Acero, Albany, is an outstanding sculptor and ceramicist who was born in Colombia, but has made a career in the U.S. He exhibits widely throughout the U.S., including New York and Puerto Rico. His sculptures are in museums and corporations such as the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Asheville Art Museum, and Avon Corporation. He earned a bachelors from the State University of NY at Fredonia and a masters in fine arts from Ohio University.  He is presently Chair of the Visual Arts program at the Sage Colleges.

    Carolyn Bardos, Lyme, N.H., is an artist who fits the title of "renaissance person." She is a noted painter and ceramicist, and has run two galleries of her own. An active playwright with productions in New Hampshire, she authored the book "Earthen Wonders: Hungarian Ceramics Today." Bardos received a bachelors in comparative literature from Eisenhower College.

    The exhibition will run through July 5, 2007.

Martinez Gallery (3 Broadway, Troy, NY, 518-274-9377) is a contemporary fine arts gallery focusing, though not exclusively, on Latino and Latin American Art.
