"The Infiltrators" with Alex Rivera

The Sanctuary for Independent Media, 3361 6th Ave., Troy, NY 12181

December 4, 2019 4:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Join director Alex Rivera for a screening of The Infiltrators, the story of a rag-tag group of undocumented youth–Dreamers–who deliberately get detained by the Border Patrol in order to infiltrate a shadowy, for-profit detention center. They’re members of the National Immigrant Youth Alliance and their goal in this film is to to find a way to stop deportations. This “mockumentary,” directed by Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera, combines actual documentary footage from the real infiltrators with re-enactments of the events which took place inside the detention center.

Alex Rivera is an award-winning filmmaker whose work explores issues that impact the Latino community, particularly on subjects of labor, immigration, and gender. He is best known for his science fiction film, Sleep Dealer (2008), which screened at the Sundance Film Festival,  and has made a number of mockumentaries particularly focusing on the transnational struggles of immigrants.

Join Alex prior to the screening, from 4:30-6:00pm, to explore strategies which blur the lines between documentary and fiction, from script writing to media activism to studio production to post-production.This workshop will be followed by a resource exchange and community meal, served at 6pm, and then a screening at 7:00pm of Rivera’s acclaimed mockumentary, The Infiltrators.
